Groups

Groups and organizations provide vital resources for helping the AMEN House fight hunger in Scott County. Below are a number of ways groups can become involved in volunteering at the AMEN House.

Projects

Here are some projects that your group or organization can do to help the AMEN House.

Personal Care Drive

We are frequently short on personal care items for our clients. You can help by collecting the following items and bringing them to the AMEN House.

  • Deodorant
  • Dish washing liquid
  • Liquid laundry soap
  • Shampoo
  • Large bar soap
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Toilet paper

Dish washing and Laundry Soap Bottling

In order to ensure that more of our clients receive donated dish washing and laundry soap, we divide larger containers into smaller water bottles. Collect plastic water bottles, purchase bulk liquid dish washing and laundry soap, divide the bulk containers into the smaller saved water bottles, label the bottles and bring them to the AMEN House.

Double Bagging

The AMEN House uses a large amount of bags to hold the canned goods we provide our clients. The weight of these cans requires that the bags be doubled to ensure that they do not come apart. You can help by collecting bags, doubling them by inserting on bag inside another and bringing the doubled bags to the AMEN House. Doubled bags should be of the same color.

Shelf Stable Kits

The AMEN House provides shelf stable food to clients that do not have permanent addresses or a place to live. Each kits contain the following items that can be opened without a can opener.

  • 6 water bottles
  • 2 cans of tuna
  • 2 spaghetti o's
  • 2 soup
  • 2 baked beans
  • 4 vienna sausage
  • 8 fruit cups
  • 4 cans of vegetables
  • 6 cereal bowls
  • 1 jar peanut butter
  • 6 cliff bars
  • 8 plastic ware

The above items can be purchased and assembled into large bags and brought to the AMEN House.

Food rescue

Volunteers are needed to help with the food rescue that is essential to providing the food necessary to adequately serve our clients. Food rescue is a great fit for groups or organizations. Groups can divide and conquer by having some of the group collect the food and others help put up the food at the AMEN House. Group members can be rotated so that everyone can participate. Below are some of the current food rescue needs.

  • 7:30am unload food at AMEN House

Food deliveries

We have two delivery programs that need drivers. The first is the AMEN House Direct program that delivers food to qualifying clients during the first week of each month. The second is the Senior Commodities Direct program that delivers food to seniors on the third Tuesday of each month. Drivers work in teams and all drivers are required to have background checks. For more information on becoming a driver, you can contact Michelle Adams at michelle_amenhouse@bellsouth.net.
